The unknown cat
61The cat with no name
Just an average day coming back from my volunteer job as an ESOL teacher. As I drove round the corner, my eyes glanced over to the right of me. In the middle of the road I saw a black cat that had been obviously hit by a car. I immediately stopped, I couldn't leave it like that so I stopped the car, still running mind you, probably stopped traffic behind me. I was going to move it to the side I thought it was dead. The poor thing wasn't as I picked it up it coughed up blood all over me. As I lay it on the side of the grass, tears welled up in my eyes. To think he was still barely alive, should I leave it? it was going to die anyway. I picked it up, placed it in the back of my car,I had blood all over me, on my backseat but I didn't care. Drove on, trying to think where the nearest vet was. Wondering how I was driving, I managed to get to a vets I had used when I was a teenager for my own cat. Got in, don't think I made much sense to the nurse, but she called someone else out, went to my car. Could see from it's eyes that it died. They took it in just to double check. I could have gone, but I waited, sat down tears running down my face. They told me there wasn't much that could have been done, as it seemed to have chest injuries. I thought to myself did I make it worse by picking it up? They told me it was probably a stray, not neutered. They asked if I wanted to clean myself, but I left.
Got home and was really upset as this was the first time I had seen an animal that had been so badly hurt. My own dog came running to me and could sense something was wrong, and would not leave my side, my two cats also sensed something wasn't right.
After talking to a friend and my sister, I took a bath and thought about this poor cat with no name. It might have just been a cat, but it was a living and breathing creature, how anyone could just run over an animal, and leave it to die and be hit by other cars is beyond me. It wasn't on a motorway, a dual carriageway, it was just in a a supermarket car park.
Would I do it again, try and save an animal I didn't know? I probably would. If we all got on treated each other better as human beings with respect, dignity and love. Then we would all not think twice about helping an injured animal, lying helpless on the road.

Thank you for sharing your sorrowful story. I too am an animal lover and stop to save them. Thank you for being kind and treating this kitty with love.
